BetterTouchTool does this too and many Mac users already have it installed. MiddleClick is a simple, one-purpose app but it’s not the only app that can execute a middle-click on a Macbook.

It works fine in its current state so there’s no need for an update just yet. There’s also the chance that should it break, the developer might update it. It’s unlikely that any update to macOS will break the app. That said, it has been updated to run on Mojave and it does work flawlessly with the current Catalina public beta. To be precise, it hasn’t changed since November 2018. MiddleClick hasn’t been updated in a while. Uncheck the ‘Look up & data detectors’ option and you can middle-click without anything popping up. If you want to disable it, open the System Preferences and go to the Trackpad preference. With this option enabled, you will be able to middle-click on a Macbook but it will also execute the default Look up function.

The only problem is that on macOS, the three-finger tap gesture is already reserved for the ‘Look up’ feature that basically selects and looks up whatever you tap on. Once the app is running, you can tap with three fingers and it will execute a ‘Middle click’. Run it and allow the app Accessibility access under the Security & Privacy preference.

The good news is, you can enable middle-click on a Macbook with a free app called MiddleClick.ĭownload and install MiddleClick. On macOS, and for MacBooks, it’s not as easy. On Windows 10, it can be enabled pretty easily. I'm using Windows 8.1, not 8, so hopefully there's nothing different between the two.I'm 99% sure that it won't make a difference.A trackpad or touchpad can support all sorts of gestures but it seems that a middle-click doesn’t always make the cut. This took me a long time to puzzle out and I'm writing this down for myself, too, in case I need to reformat and redo it at some point. You can set it to whatever you want.in my case, I chose Page Down because I use three finger press for middle click.ġ2b) For 3 finger press, go to the "multi-finger" tab, then choose "clicking" - on the right now, there is options for both 2 finger press-click and 3-finger press click. Be warned, for the "pressing" options, once you click okay and close this window, the options will disappear and you'll have to go back into the registry and repeat steps 7b and 8b.ġ2a) For 3 finger tap, stay on the "one-finger" tab, then choose "tapping" - on the right now, there will be a new option "Three finger" below 1 and 2 finger. If you want 3 finger middle click from tapping, navigate to the following key: HKCU\Software\Elantech\SmartPadĨb) Edit the following keys from 0 to 1 - Tap_Three_Finger_ShowItemġ0) Now double click on the Elantech options icon in the tray again.ġ1) Notice that you have more items then before. If you want 3 finger middle click with pressing, navigate to the following key: HKCU\Software\Elantech\SmartPadDisplayĨa) Edit the following keys from 0 to 1 - Click_Display and Click2F_Displayħb). We won't be here most of the time anyway.

Double clicking it will show a less fancy, more utilitarian driver interface fine by me. You can get it from softpedia here, pay no attention the fact it's for a Gateway system the touchpads are compatible.ģ)Install the driver - you made sure to remove the ASUS Smart Gesture first, right?ĥ)In the system tray, you can see the new icon. Just go to devmgmt.msc and delete it.Ģ) Acquire the Elantech 11.6.8 driver (your mileage may vary with others it's what I've had success with). That's not possible anymore, so Pressing down on the touchpad, or tapping on the touchpad, is my solution to get a new tab to open when I 3-finger click on the touchpad.ġ) Uninstall the "ASUS Smart Gesture" driver that comes with the pad. Thanks to the idiots at Apple, new aluminum/thin computers are doing away with buttons on their touchpads (great for OSX, I guess (don't really care) but stupid for Windows) so what used to work for middle click was hitting buttons one and two at the same time. I'm new here, but I've spent the past couple hours tweaking Elantech's settings on the trackpad driver to find the setting I need most - 3 finger middle click.
